For nearly 16 years customers have been asking us for unique fonts for their web site’s content. In the past our standard answer was “HTML is very limited when it comes to fonts. Your choices are Times Roman, Arial…”. We could always attempt to use any font but if the customer looking at your web site does not have that font installed, they will probably see their browser’s default font, usually Times Roman.

Fonts could be converted to a graphic but this was never recommended. Why? Other than alt tags, search engines cannot read graphics. This would negatively impact your search engine rankings. Adding more graphics to your pages will slow your site down causing impatient customers to go elsewhere. The only advantage is the appearance.

Are we still stuck with the same boring fonts?
No! We now have Dynamic Fonts! Dynamic fonts allow us to actually download fonts along with the page that uses them. The amount of fonts now available for your web site is growing. The Webwright uses Google web fonts when a more creative font is needed. Visit Google web fonts to see the possibilities. Click on the paragraph tab to see what these fonts look like in paragraph format.

Note: When you select certain fonts, the legibility may be affected. Some fonts are not easy to read. Keep your target market in mind. Are you marketing to older folks who need larger easy to read type? Maybe you are going after the young hip crowd. Choose your fonts and font sizes accordingly. Don’t use too many fonts! Not only is this bad design, but the more fonts your customers download the slower your pages load.
